Martin diagnosed a lack of flexibility in all my major
muscle groups and encouraged me to undertake a programme
of stretching and strengthening exercises. He also identified
a significant imbalance in my pelvic region, highlighting
a weakness in the muscles on the right side of my lower
back and pelvis.
I began to see Martin for regular preventative sports
massage, an area in which I believe he excels. The benefits
have been enormous. My running has become much more
consistent and I have increased my average weekly mileage
from about 40 miles in the winter/spring of 2005 to
75 miles in the spring of 2007. This has been facilitated
by the improvements in my flexibility and strength in
the lower body muscle groups. I have seen a corresponding
improvement in my performances at all distances but
particularly over the marathon.
Martin has taught me to appreciate and understand the
major muscle groups I employ in my running and how to
care for them. He has made me aware of my weaknesses
and instructed me on how to improve. As a result I have
become very aware of distinguishing between everyday
soreness and a developing injury that needs rest and
immediate treatment. The result is that I have missed
only about 2 weeks' running due to injury in the last
18 months.
I visit Martin every 3 to 4 weeks for preventative
massage. It is therapeutic and allows me to reflect
on and assess my physical condition and modify my training
accordingly. I always feel that I am Martin's sole concern
during my session and he is hands-on for the full time.
Finally (and perhaps what I now value most), as an
ex-elite runner, Martin's encouragement and mentoring
have had a major impact on my performance over the last
two years. It is no coincidence that during this period
I have recorded PBs at all distances and become genuinely
competitive at my chosen discipline, the marathon.

Martin is without doubt the best sports trainer in Wales.
He recently introduced me to "KettleBells"
- basically a cannonball with an old fashioned kettle
handle - and the exercises and techniques required to
get the optimum benefit from them.
.....my body shape changed very quickly. My shoulders,
arms and back became bigger and more defined. Legs more
solid. Stomach much flatter. My posture improved. I
lost body fat, particularly noticed by friends and family,
around the face, chin, and torso.
...what is so surprising is that the KettleBell workout
is only about 35 minutes, but the results are easily
better than circuits, or gym work, in relation to time
investment.
